Insurance Commissioner Praeger to host three informational meetings

Sandy Praeger, Commissioner of Insurance, will host health insurance informational meetings in Hays, Overland Park and Wichita in November and December. The public meetings will focus on the new federal health reform law, health insurance regulation and how health insurance rates are determined.

University of Kansas student receives insurance settlement scholarship

Sandy Praeger, Commissioner of Insurance, has awarded a $1,000 scholarship to a University of Kansas minority student as part of a program established by an insurance company’s discrimination suit settlement.

New Kansas pre-existing condition insurance pool begins taking applications

A new temporary federal high-risk pool for uninsured Kansans with pre-existing medical conditions is now taking applications, according to Sandy Praeger, commissioner of insurance. Coverage for Kansans accepted into the pool may begin as early as Sept. 1, 2010.

Insurance Commissioner Sandy Praeger makes Firefighters Relief Fund distribution

Kansas Insurance Commissioner Sandy Praeger is currently making the annual distribution of funds to state and local firefighter relief organizations. More than $9.7 million will be distributed among 580 local Firefighters Relief Associations (FRAs) across the state. That is $500,000 more than the 2009 total.

Commissioner Praeger approves Security Benefit-Guggenheim Partners proposals

Kansas Insurance Commissioner Sandy Praeger today approved the proposed transactions necessary for Security Benefit Corporation to be purchased by a group of investors led by Guggenheim Partners LLC.

Commissioner Praeger issues orders, sets meetings for SBC regulatory review process

Kansas Insurance Commissioner Sandy Praeger has issued orders to govern the regulatory review process for the proposed change of ownership of Security Benefit Corporation (SBC).

Commissioner Praeger has also set dates for public and regulatory meetings on the proposal.

Kansas Health Plans, American Cancer Society, and Kansas Insurance Commissioner
Unite to Promote Colon Cancer Screening

In recognition that March is Colon Cancer Awareness Month, the Kansas Association of Health Plans (KAHP), the American Cancer Society (Society), and Kansas Insurance Commissioner Sandy Praeger announced today at a joint news conference that they are joining forces in an effort to fight colon cancer by emphasizing to Kansans that preventive colon cancer screenings should be a priority and are a covered benefit for members of individual and group health plans.

AMA again honors Commissioner Praeger with top government service award

Kansas Insurance Commissioner Sandy Praeger is a 2010 recipient of the American Medical Association’s (AMA) top government service award for an elected statewide official. This is the second time she has won an AMA service award.

Commissioner Praeger is one of nine honorees chosen this year to receive the Davis award for outstanding government service. The award, named for the founding father of the AMA, recognizes elected and career officials in federal, state or municipal service whose outstanding contributions have promoted the art and science of medicine and the betterment of public health.

Four companies ordered to stop selling misleading insurance products in Kansas

Sandy Praeger, Kansas Commissioner of Insurance, has issued a cease and desist order for four companies and four individuals for selling unauthorized health insurance and distributing deceptive advertising. The companies are Real Benefits Association, Serve America Assurance LTD, American Trade Association LTD and Smart Data Solutions LLC. All are headquartered in other states.

Annuity settlement money will go to state general fund

A $417,000 settlement check received by the Kansas Insurance Department will be deposited into the state’s general fund, Commissioner of Insurance Sandy Praeger announced today. The settlement is from Nationwide Life Insurance Co. and Nationwide Life and Annuity Insurance Co. for alleged unsuitable sales of variable annuities to clients of a Kansas-based financial advisory business, Waddell & Reed Inc.

Insurance Department provides clout for federal conviction of Kansas City agent

The Kansas Insurance Department (KID) assisted federal authorities in convicting a Kansas City-area insurance agent on insurance and mortgage fraud activities. Investigators from the KID Anti-fraud Division provided federal authorities with more than 30 cases that had been opened in the investigation of Ron Brown, a former Kansas City, Kan. insurance agent.

Commissioner Praeger, anti-fraud director to attend national summit

Kansas Insurance Commissioner Sandy Praeger and Ted Clark, the Kansas Insurance Department’s Anti-Fraud Director, will participate in the National Summit on Health Care Fraud Thursday, Jan. 28, in Bethesda, MD.

Kansas Insurance Department recovers near-record total for Kansas consumers

Kansas Insurance Commissioner Sandy Praeger’s office helped thousands of Kansas consumers settle disputes with their insurance companies in 2009, recovering more than $15 million in insurance claims for policyholders. This is the second time in three years the department has topped the $15 million figure. The $15,033,290.41 recovered in 2009 is just short of the record $15.1 million recovery in 2007 (see attached table).
