Medicare Supplement On-Line Shopper's Guide
Medicare Supplement policies to see big changes
Changes to Medicare supplement plans that will take effect June 1, 2010, will include the elimination of several plans and the addition of two new plans, as well as several benefit changes. The On-Line Shopper's Guide will begin displaying the new rates in March 2010, and the printed Medicare Supplement Insurance Shopper's Guide is expected to be available in May. You may currently pre-order the printed 2010 shopper's guide on our Request Publications page.
The total number of plans will be reduced to 11 from the 14 that are currently offered. Plans E, H, I, J and High Deductible J will be eliminated.
The changes will also include the creation of Plans M and N, which have higher beneficiary cost-sharing. Plan N has benefits similar to Plan D but with a $20 co-pay for doctor visits and a $50 co-pay for emergency room visits. Plan M is similar to Plan D but will only cover half of the Part A deductible.
A new hospice benefit will be added to all plans, replacing at-home recovery and preventative care benefits. Additionally, the Medicare Part B Excess Charges benefit of 80% will be replaced with a 100% benefit for Plan G.
Any carrier that offers a Med Supp plan beyond Plan A will be required to also offer Plan C or Plan F. Plans can be marketed prior to June 1, but they won’t be effective until that date.
